The Discovery Diaries, our flagship STEM education programme, is an example of our commitment to our funding goals and to pursuing deep engagement and longevity, long after those goals have been met.
Principia Space Diary with ESA Astronaut Tim Peake
Our first arts-based STEM education programme, created with author Lucy Hawking with funding from the UK Space Agency. This first programme saw 38,500 free books distributed to UK schools and over 60,000 students reached.
Principia Space Diary Legacy Project
Following the enormous success of the Space Diary, the UK Space Agency partnered with us once more to develop an enhanced edition of the Diary. We reached a further 35,000 students across the UK in 2017 alone. This free resource continues to be hugely popular and is available at discoverydiaries.org
Mission Mars Diary
Collaborating once again with Lucy Hawking and the UK Space Agency, we created the Mission Mars Diary – a STEM-literacy adventure to the red planet. We reached over 80,000 students in 1500 schools and education settings and gifted 22,500 books to primary schools.
Deep Space Diary
Our third space-themed primary STEM programme was created with Dr Olivia Johnson, in collaboration with the Science and Technology Facilities Council. The initial programme saw 15,300 books gifted, giving students aged 7-11 a creative and empowering introduction to the James Webb Space Telescope.
Welsh Discovery Diaries
With the generous support of the Welsh Government, the UK Space Agency and the STFC, we translated the entire Discovery Diaries series into Welsh, including extensive teaching materials. This is a unique resource for Welsh-medium schools is available for free from the Discovery Diaries website.
The Deep Space Diary’s Time to Shine!
2021 is the year of launch for the James Webb Space Telescope – an event over 20 years in the making, involving scientists and engineers from all over the world. We worked again with the STFC to print and distribute 35,000 copies of the Deep Space Diary (in Welsh and English) to schools across the UK.
